Professor Richard Perdue of the University of Colorado at Boulder Leeds School of Business has been elected president of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. The academy is the premier scholarly organization in the field of tourism with only 75 elected members representing the top tourism scholars internationally. The academy's goal is to further the scholarly research and professional investigation of tourism.

One of two sessions of aerial photography at the University of Colorado at Boulder was postponed earlier this week because of overcast weather conditions. It has been rescheduled for Friday, May 21st, weather permitting. If adverse weather conditions prevail Friday, it will be conducted on Saturday, May 22nd.

Eight students with a passion for public service have been selected for the Puksta Scholars Program, a civic education and leadership program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Matthew de Caussin, Travis Macy, Raven Semien, Kathleen Krohne, Jennifer Young, Diana Silva, Amy Hutmacher and Erin Fischer were chosen for their commitment to civic engagement, socially responsible citizenship, leadership and encouragement of positive social change. They join nine others receiving $4,500 scholarships in the Puksta program for a total of 17 scholars in the program.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will be conducting aerial photography over the Boulder campus and surrounding areas on May 18 and May 20, weather permitting. The helicopter flights will begin at approximately 7 a.m. on both days and are expected to last about two hours each. The aircraft will be hovering and circling the main CU campus, Williams Village complex and possibly the Chautauqua area. The morning flights are required to capture the early morning light on the Flatirons.

The CU-Boulder Leeds School of Business is launching a Center for Business and Society to provide a broad approach to business education and examine the roles and contributions of business to society, Dean Steven Manaster announced. "The Center for Business and Society aligns with the Leeds School's mission to expand the scope of business education by creating leaders who take a broad perspective on the role of businesses in society," Manaster said.

Science students at West High School in Denver on May 18 will hear details about the Cassini Mission to Saturn from one of the mission's lead scientists, Larry Esposito, a professor of planetary science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Esposito will deliver his presentation at 9:30 a.m. inside the school's main auditorium.

The CU-Boulder Facilities Management department is planning to spray weeds bordering streets and in certain lawn areas this weekend in order to help re-establish healthy grass in places where it has been choked off by a proliferation of weeds. Most playfields and other major lawn areas will not be sprayed.

Residents of Smiley Court, a family housing facility at the University of Colorado at Boulder, are being offered temporary relocation to other on-campus housing while problems with some gas lines are repaired, according to Deb Coffin, director of housing at CU-Boulder. In order to repair inferior gas-line welds, gas service was turned off Thursday, resulting in the loss of hot water and heat for residents. Relocation is not mandatory, but is offered as an option for those inconvenienced by the gas shut-off. The apartments are safe for habitation, Coffin said.

MEDIA ADVISORY The Boulder Faculty Assembly will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today to discuss a draft proposal for reform of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The meeting will be held in room 157 of the Fleming Law Building on the CU-Boulder campus. Television crews planning to attend should arrive before the meeting begins and set up in the left rear corner of the room.

The booms and bangs of chemical reactions will reverberate at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Saturday, May 15, during the CU Wizards show "Polymers, Foams and Pressures." Associate professor of chemistry Tarek Sammakia's show will take place at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry room 140. It is free and open to the public. CU Wizards is an annual series during the school year that introduces topics in astronomy, chemistry and physics and is intended primarily for students in grades five through nine.
