University of Colorado Boulder biologist Leslie Leinwand has been selected as a member of the 2014 class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, which honors the leading 鈥渢hinkers and doers鈥� from each generation, including scientists, scholars, writers and artists.

The greater prevalence of asthma, allergies and other chronic inflammatory disorders among people of lower socioeconomic status might be due in part to their reduced exposure to the microbes that thrive in rural environments, according to a new scientific paper co-authored by a University of Colorado Boulder researcher.

A deployable fire hose stand designed for the Longmont Fire Department and a heat-resistant mask designed to protect firefighters and fire victims from poisonous fumes will be among more than 90 student inventions showcased at the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 Engineering Design Expo on Saturday, April 26. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature a wide range of student-built devices including adaptive technology for people with disabilities, Rube Goldberg machines and even hovercrafts.

Professor Robert S. Anderson of the University of Colorado Boulder鈥檚 geological sciences department and Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research has been awarded the 2014 Hazel Barnes Prize, the most distinguished award a faculty member can receive from the university.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is pleased to announce that Professor Peter Molnar of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences and the Department of Geological Sciences has been selected as the 2014 Distinguished Research Lecturer.

Byron Chrisman (鈥�66), perhaps one of the University of Colorado Boulder Law School鈥檚 most unlikely success stories, attributes his success as a tax attorney and real estate developer to his experience at Colorado Law. Now he and his wife, Carlene, have committed a $10 million bequest to endow the Byron and Carlene Chrisman Chairs in Free Enterprise at Colorado Law. When realized upon their passing, this estate gift will be the largest cash gift in the history of Colorado Law.
