The University of Colorado at Boulder and the City of Montrose announced July 31 that the university will pilot an interdisciplinary educational program that will bring a wide range of programs and special events to Montrose and surrounding communities. Called "CU in Residence," the project will offer everything from K-12 teacher, student and parent education to programs for business and civic leaders, senior groups and the cultural and performing arts.

More than 1,000 researchers from around the world including an astronaut who conducted fire experiments in space will meet in Boulder Aug. 3 to Aug. 7 for the 27th International Symposium on Combustion. Co-sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder's College of Engineering and Applied Science and the Colorado School of Mines, the conference will showcase the most up-to-date findings in combustion research. The meeting, held every two years and which rotates between the United States and Europe, will be held at CU-Boulder.

Twenty-one high school teachers from Colorado and other states will take on an unusual research project from Aug. 2 to Aug. 7, spending a week with scientists studying the effects of human activities in the Boulder Creek watershed. Sponsored by the University of Colorado at Boulder-based Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, the workshop will allow the teachers to conduct hands-on research on issues that affect the daily lives of Boulder County residents.

Outstanding graduates of the University of Colorado at Boulder will be recognized Aug. 8 in summer commencement exercises. An estimated 1,030 students will receive diplomas in the ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the historic Norlin Quadrangle.

A University of Colorado at Boulder chemical engineering team has developed new techniques and materials that show promise for faster healing of severe bone fractures and the regeneration of cartilage in ailing joints.

University of Colorado at Boulder student Sarah Henderson has received a $19,900 National Security Education Program fellowship to study in Russia. Henderson, a political science doctoral candidate from Spartanburg, S.C., will study Russia's developing women's movement and the role the West plays in shaping such movements.

University of Colorado President John Buechner and Chancellor Richard L. Byyny today announced receipt of a $962,000 grant awarded for the W.M. Keck Optical Measurement Laboratory to be located in JILA, a research and teaching institute on the Boulder campus. Funding is from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles, one of the nation's largest philanthropic organizations. Established in 1954 by the late William Myron Keck, founder of the Superior Oil Company, the Foundation's grantmaking is focused primarily on breakthrough research in science, engineering and medicine.

CU-Boulder researchers are participating in a major international field experiment to understand climate change trends in the Arctic and whether the Arctic Ocean ice pack is thinning as fast as climate models are predicting.

The University of Colorado at Boulder's Science Discovery Program, now in its 10th year, will once again provide a number quality education programs for K-12 students from around Colorado. Following are some highlights of programs offered this summer: o Girls on the Wild Side: Outdoor Adventures and Explorations in Science, July 20-24, offers girls the chance to actively participate and excel in natural science, outdoor exploration and adventure. Campers will have the chance to rock climb and raft while learning local geology and river ecology.

An estimated 1,030 students will receive diplomas Aug. 8 from the University of Colorado at Boulder in outdoor commencement exercises. Of the diplomas presented, approximately 674 will be bachelor's degrees, 233 will be master's degrees and 123 will be doctoral degrees. The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. with a procession of graduates, faculty and administrators led by Dean of Libraries James Williams as commencement marshal.
